My lovely NYC neighbour ‘ACP’ told me I had to go to Empire Cake and try their Salted Caramel Cupcake.
I told her I was actually going to be down near that area on Sunday and popped in after going through the pop-up Seinfeld apartment.
Husband and I had been past and in Empire Cake before but I had never been in the mood to try anything (I know, I must have been ill).
So on Sunday I made up for my past opportunities and bought their Salted Caramel Cupcake, Brooklyn Blackout Snack Cake and a slice of their Liz Lemon cake. As soon as the sales person told me it was called Liz Lemon – I knew I had to have it.
“Chocolate cake with a salted caramel filling, frosted with Belgian chocolate ganache and a sprinkle of sea salt.”
I thought it was pretty good. Definitely has the salt element. The ganache was quite hard and I should have taken my neighbour’s advice and nuked it in the mircowave for 10 secs to melt it down a bit.

Brooklyn Blackout Snack Cake (snack cake = homemade twinkie)
“..chocolate cake with chocolate pudding filling, dipped in Belgian chocolate and sprinkled with cake crumbs”
This was nice. It was like a home made twinkie. I could definitely see how these could be popular.
“Vanilla crème fraîche cake layered with organic lemon curd and frosted with black currant Swiss meringue buttercream.”
My favourite cake in New York so far. It was like a lemon meringue wrapped with cake wrapped in creamy frosting.

Empire Cake is one of ‘the’ cake places to go to for your decorated cakes.
So how much is this Minion cake? Only $2500-3000 USD. Chump change really.
